Members of AFSCME, DC 37, Local 3005 are employees of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). We are City Research Scientists, Criminalists, Water Ecologists, Administrative Public Health Nurses, Chemists, Architects, Engineers, Graphic Artists, Scientists in Radiological Health serving the five boroughs of New York City.
Our scientists monitor radiological equipment and perform research and analysis within the physical, biological, and environmental sciences. Our Architects and Engineers uniformly combine their disciplines to design new and update existing medical clinics and laboratories.
Our crimianlists work within the Forensic Biology, Forensic Toxicology, & Forensic Outreach Departments. They are responible for the independent scientific investigation of any evidence submitted from a suspected death, whether it is a suspected homicide, suicide, or death occurring within a hospital; any suspected rape, any suspected property crime, such as burglaries and / or robberies, any criminal possession of weapons and in assisting with the identification of missing persons, such as the identifications of the victims of the World Trade Center. The NYC OCME is also responsible for performance testing in cases of suspected Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) & Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and reporting the independent findings to law enforcement, District Attorneys’ Offices, Defense Attorneys’ Offices, and / or families upon request and testifying to the findings in court as necessary.
